You will find most professinoal skateboarders to be creative. It is the nature of the beast. Max Schaff creative outlet is building and painting vintage motorcycles. Judging by the number of people who praise his bike builds and paint jobs plus the number of visitors to his blog 4Qconditioning, Max’s other creative outlet is much admired just like his skateboarding.

Utility’s own wanna be Biker Bad Boy Josh Conley sat down with Max Schaaf to talk about skating, bikes and more.  Check out the interview below.

1. It seems every skater must have another creative outlet beyond skateboarding. Your creative side seems to be building motorcycles. Why not the standard paint brush or guitar?
I’ve tried guitar…. it’s tuff.  the paint brush…. i dunno there’s enough of that.  So then i tried painting on guitars and that just didn’t stick.  So then i became blog the hawg chopper.

2. How did 4Q start?
4Q started as something i put on the side of my gas tank….  a not as obvious profanity.  then people saw the bike around and referred to it as the “4Q bike”.  So i just went with it.  I really do love and enjoy messing wit h the bikes. fabrication, painting, day dreaming, and searching for chopper parts. So it became something on it’s own pretty natural.

3. What is more frustrating trying land a trick that you don’t have in the bag or working on one B.S. piece that no one ever sees on your bike ?
skating is always harder. they both require patience which is always a challenge for me.

4. What pumped you up the most on the beauty and the beast tour?
just being able to go on that tour with that group of skaters… is pump worthy.  no bad vibes, camping out and skating with your friends at spots you have never been to.  it’s rad to be getting older and see the younger dudes rip and have them push you to do stuff that day to day you might not go for.

5. You skated in the mecca when history was being made. What is a good memory that comes to mind of the times?
there’s a lot man. but when i first got to skate and hang out with the GONZ that was pretty nuts.  absorbing his imagination and skating my ramp with him and trying fucked up tricks, it was all a really cool time.

6. Is the Girl and AntiHero team as different as they appear?
not at all…were all just skate rats. that some how found each other. the lines get blurred about a day into the trip and you almost forget who skates for who.

7. Who is taller me or Shawn?
shawn is….. but now that i know he spells his name so delicately you may have just shoot up past him.
